The concept of wellness is dominating the housing industry. Today’s renters are motivated by healthy living and want to live in spaces that are designed to support their lifestyle choices. But gone are the days that wellness was defined by simply including a fitness center in a community plan. For it to be successful, the concept of wellness should extend far beyond the walls of a fitness center, rather, shaping the identity of the community at large.

In a recent presentation for the NAHB, KEPHART’s Director of Design, Bobby Long, and TRIO’s CEO, Angela Harris, discussed how to design communities that are rooted in wellness. Their presentation highlighted the importance of creating connection to the outdoors, using natural materials and biophilic elements, creating spaces that are flexible in use, and allowing for an abundance of natural light and ventilation, ultimately establishing communities that rent easily and people love living in.
