This monthly feature showcases the wonderful people who work for KEPHART. At KEPHART we believe our most important asset is our people; each unique member of our team is a member of our family.
This month we introduce Zach Spillers!
KEPHART- When did you know you wanted to become an architect?
Zach– I knew I was interested in designing the built environment when I was 10 years old. My parents designed restaurants and my uncle was an architect. And so, my passion for design began to grow.
KEPHART- What projects are you currently working on?
Zach– I’m currently working on a concept design for a multifamily project in RiNo as well as developing some concept renderings for a senior living project in Wheat Ridge.
KEPHART – If you didn’t pursue a career in architecture, what do you think you would be doing right now?
Zach– In my spare time, I do leather work as a hobby. So, I would probably be forming and cultivating a leather product company. Though in addition to design, I have a passion for people. So, it’s possible that I would be a counselor of some sort.
KEPHART- What music are you currently listening to?
Zach– Currently on my curated Spotify playlist, I have: Gregory Alan Isakov, The Flaming Lips, Radio Head, Alex Bailey, The Avett Brothers, Outkast, and Lake Street Dive, in my top rotation.
KEPHART- What weird or random item is currently on your desk?
Zach– A drone. Here at Kephart we are beginning to utilize drone technology to build site models with a process called photogrammetry. The drone is sitting on my desk, awaiting its next adventure.
KEPHART- Beside yourself, who is your favorite architect and why?
Zach– These days, Lake Flato has captured the spot for my favorite architect. I really appreciate the authenticity of their buildings, from the expressed details to the materiality vernacular of the Hill Country.
KEPHART- What do you love about working for KEPHART?
Zach– I love that I get to do what I love – design and experiment with developing technology. The people here are great to work with as well.
KEPHART- What do you love about working and living in Denver / Colorado?
Zach– I love the walkability of the city and the proximity to mountain adventures.
KEPHART- As an architect, what tool (digital or physical) can you not live without?
Zach– As much as I love digital technology, I can’t live without paper and a pen.
KEPHART- Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
Zach– That has changed periodically throughout my life, but at the moment I am inspired by the modern philosopher, Peter Rollins.
